Once again, Annie Lennox has created a great album. I can honestly say there isn't a song I don't like on this CD. From the slow and moving to the upbeat and groovy. If you like Annie Lennox, this is a must have.

Beautifully Arranged, Exquisite Vocals, & Completely Mesmerizing!

Elegant and heartfelt....no one, male or female has ever done an album more artistically than British songbird, Annie Lennox. With some songs sounding a bit familiar with shades of the "Diva" CD's "Cold" and the "Bare" CD's "Something So Right," "Songs of Mass Destruction" is Annie Lennox's strongest and best arranged CD to date! From the very first track, "Dark Road," the listener is swept into one "story" after another, as each song foretells of desires, longings, and heartaches.

"Dark Road" begins the cd and brings to mind the sheer beauty of "No More I Love You's" from the "Diva" cd, and is then followed by a great rythmned "Love Is Blind," which I hope makes a fantastic DJ "mix" project. "Smithereens" is another incredibly beautiful mix of love ballad meets pop song- beautifully done. "Ghosts in the Machine" brings an inspired Gospel beat to the collection and is followed by "Womankind," which is a creative mix of Annie's vocals in various formations making it a fun listen! "Through The Glass Darkly" is another lovely ballad, however, Annie's continuous "Yeah-ah-ah, Yeah,ah,ah, Yeah,ah,ah" is almost overwrought making her voice sound more strained than melodious.

The soul searching on "Lost" is heartfelt and you can even imagine a flock of birds crying out "We're lost! We're lost! We're lost!" as the song drifts along and becomes quiet haunting. "Coloured Bedspread" will remind Eurythmics fans of Annie and Dave Stewart's "European synthesizer" days as it brings the most dynamic range of synthesizers and lush vocal sounds giving a more "Eurythmics" sound than anything the duo has released since, "Sweet Dreams," "Love Is A Stranger," or even "Here Comes The Rain Again."

An announcement proceeds the next track, "Sing" informing the listener of an African women's drug abuse prevention charity and is an encouraging track with lots of great vocals. A stirring and VERY beautifully vocal "Big Sky" sweeps your imagination with an array of thoughts, both sad and hopeful. "Fingernail Moon" brings the CD to it's grand finale and is a lovely close to an incredible collection of songs that are beautifully woven together by Annie's "storyteller" voice that beckons the listener to return again and again for another journey into a beautiful world of "Dark Roads," "Coloured Bedspreads," "Big Skies," and "Fingernail Moons..." Bravo! If this album doesn't sweep the Grammy's, then true musical taste and artistic talent is forever in serious trouble and probably dead. This is the best CD this pop/rock collector has heard in years! 10 stars!!

A Beautiful Sadness

Skrevet: 16.10.2007

When I first heard that Annie Lennox was releasing a new album called "Songs of Mass Destruction,"I thought that perhaps she was going to go political, and sing songs about the horrible state of our world. I then heard the single "Dark Road" and thought, "what exactly is Annie singing about here?" I thought the message was a bit ambiguous, but after a few additional listens I realized that maybe I was supposed to feel a sense of ambiguity, because Annie was feeling this way herself. I've come to really like this song, but I still get a little confused.

The second song "Love Is Blind" shocked me a bit on my first listen. She sings, "sometimes I feel like I don't exist, cut my veins and slit my wrists. Goodbye. Goodbye." What?! I have never in my life heard a singer speak of suicide, and certainly never expected to hear it from Annie Lennox. I related to the song deeply though, in that I have attempted to end my life a few times, and the feelings expressed in this song are exactly the feelings that I felt during my emotionally traumatic events.

The large portions of the album are songs of love lost, abandoned love, despair, and the reawakening of the emotional strength to recover - and the flipping of the finger. The songs could come across as depressing, especially if you are not an evolved person, that has experienced the hurt and pain of an extreme breaking of the heart. As a 54 year old man, I am able to realize that the emotions expressed on this album are universal, and Annie Lennox is not only speaking to us about her life, but also offering her experiences for our lives.

I own all of Annie Lennox's solo albums, and many of the Eurythmics (did I spell this correctly?) albums, and "Songs of Mass Destruction" speaks to me in a very personal way, and is Annie's most beautiful musical creation yet. I have been listening to it a lot since purchasing it, and I encourage all mature music lovers to buy this album, and listen to it with an open heart.

Annie Lennox Is The Best

Skrevet: 15.10.2007

I just want to say how much I love the new Annie Lennox CD. I believe she is the best female singer/songwriter of our generation. She is truly without equal. Songs of Mass Destruction is my pick for album of the year. It's actually better than Diva. Favorites are Smithereens, Love Is Blind, Sing and Fingernail Moon. Everyone should own this CD.

What a great gift from the fabulous Annie Lennox. Yes, I wish she was more prolific, but every album is like a wonderful gift to her fans. Dark Road hypnotized me when I first heard it and I could not wait for the rest of the CD. I was not disappointed! This is a wonderful set of new tunes covering a myriad of genres. Fron the accordian (really cool) on Ghost in My Machine to the electronica on Coloured Bedspread this is a great album. I cannot recommend this enough. Please Annie, don't wait so long before your next album! See you at Symphony Hall!
