The DVD-RV30S is the silver version of Panasonic's popular DVD-RV30 DVD player (black). These are both 2000 models, since replaced by the DVD-RV31S and DVD-RV31K (silver and black, respectively). With both the RV30 and the RV31, of course, there's no functional difference between the silver and black models.

An Endangered Species

Because of its age, you're not likely to find the RV30S for sale new. Of the links here, the one for millionbuy.com is a mistake, but, apparently, centralpcs.com is really selling it for $210. I'd pass up that deal, because jandr.com has the newer RV31 for $161. The best price on half.com for the RV30 is $147. It's not really worth saving the $14, because the RV31 adds CD-R/RW and MP3 playback to the RV30S feature set. Also, to save a few bucks you'd be buying used from a private seller versus new merch with guarantee and warranty from jandr.com.

If you're interested in the RV31, which adds several features to the excellent RV30S, take a look here:

http://www.epinions.com/content_54680325764

RV30S, the Silver Version of an All-Time Classic

The RV30 enjoyed a very popular run in its day, as reflected by the 60 reviews it got here at Epinions, one of the best-rated DVD players ever listed here. It's not surprising that the RV30 did well. It's a solidly-built machine. In fact, unusual for consumer electronics products these days, it's actually made in Japan.

The silver version of the RV30, the RV30S, is a single disc DVD player. It will also play CD's, VCD's, and DTS-Audio discs. The picture quality is excellent.

This player's digital-audio output will pass either a Dolby Digital (DD) or Digital Theater Surround (DTS) datastream to your A/V receiver. The digital-audio output will also pass the PCM signal from your CD's. There is a single optical (fiber-optic) jack for the digital-audio output.

Ease of Use

The RV30S is pretty straightforward. If you don't want to mess around, you can connect it to your TV, hit the drawer-open button on the remote, lay a disc on the platter, hit drawer-close, wait a minute for the disc to start spinning at play speed, and hit play.

There's a menu system to allow you to make any necessary changes, such as setting the player for 16:9 (widescreen) output instead of the default 4:3. You can also make changes which affect the type of signal output when DD or DTS soundtracks are played.

Inputs/Outputs

In order of ascending quality, video outputs include composite-video, S-Video, and component-video. Audio outputs, besides the optical digital-audio output, include a set of L/R analog outputs and a low-frequency effects (LFE) line-level bass output. The bass output is for situations where you are using the analog stereo (L/R) outputs of the player and you want to feed a self-powered subwoofer. It's somewhat superfluous since, if you had stereo speaker wires coming out of a receiver fed by the L/R output from the DVD player, you could just run the speaker wires into the speaker-level input of most subwoofers. You would then run speaker wires from the subwoofer speaker-level outputs and you'd have stereo audio through your speakers plus sub-level audio from the sub. The RV30S's sub output would come in handy for subs that had no speaker-level I/O's. When you are using the analog outs plus the sub out, Panasonic calls this "2+Bass" mode.

Please note that if your TV doesn't even have a composite (a.k.a. A/V) input jack, and only has RF input, you'll need to buy an RF modulator in order to connect the DVD player. These are available at Radio Shack for about $30. Unfortunately, you'll lose quite a bit of the picture quality advantage of DVD by running it through the RF input with a modulator. Think about maybe treating yourself to a new TV also.

Transport Controls

Folks who love reading credits will be pleased to note that the RV30S features a frame freeze control. Between the freeze frame, and the higher resolution of DVD's (480 interlaced horizontal lines versus 330i for broadcast TV and 240i for VHS tapes). Control freaks will do doubt be pleased by the RV30's frame-by-frame advance, plus high-speed smooth-motion scan with five speeds, going as high as 100x. I bet you can think of many ways these features could enhance your A/V experience and many video productions which would benefit greatly from the ability to stop at individual frames. I know I can.
A "chapter preview" feature can refresh your memory of a movie by automatically displaying the first three seconds of each previously-viewed chapter. The "quick start" feature will be a boon to folks who just can't wait for their favorite movie to commence. To quickly get to any place in a movie you desire, there's a title/chapter search with marker function and a skip forward/reverse function.

Remote

The remote on the RV30S is compact. The buttons work fine, though they are mushy and provide no tactile "click" feedback. The remote isn't backlit, but there's a small nub on the play button and you will soon learn to operate all the major controls with your thumb without having to look at the remote.

Included Cable

The RV30S comes with an A/V cable which will carry the L/R audio and composite-video feed from the player to your TV. It's a perfectly good quality cable and there's no need to replace it if using it for the DVD-TV connection. If you need an optical digital-audio cable, an S-Video cable, component cables, or a separate audio cable to feed a receiver, you'll have to buy that separately.

Conclusion

The RV30S is a nice player, but you're not going to find it for sale often. When you do, it'll probably be priced too close to its superior replacement, the RV31, to make it worthwhile. Because of that, I'm not going to recommend it. If you can find a good deal on e-bay with this player, say for under about $100, then go for it. Otherwise, just get the RV31 from jandr.com.

I'm a big fan of Panasonic products. When I was in the market for a DVD player a year ago, I immediately looked to see what Panasonic had to offer. If I bought a DVD player and it lasted anywhere near as long as the Panasonic 1980's style vacuum cleaner or that Panasonic adding machine that I still balance my checkbook with, I'd be thrilled.

So far, so good with my Panasonic DVD-RV30.

I bought this player last Christmas as a gift to myself and have been pleased with it ever since. The picture quality is terrific! I use S-Video to my 32" television. I was wondering if I should have sprung for a TV with composite inputs because the RV-30 has composite outputs but I found that the picture was crystal clear with your basic S-Video found on most large TV's.

I run component audio (white and red audio RCA plugs) through my average-sounding 4 speaker surround sound stereo and am thrilled with the results. There are options on the RV-30 to control the sound output to enhance voices and dialogue on movies. But once you arrange all the sound settings through the on-screen displays, you will probably never have to change them again.

As for durability, the player survived a move from one apartment to another and it's still running beautifully after one year of use. There may be a newer model out now that plays MP3's stored on CD's so check for that in the stores as well.

The remote is easy to use and if you can still find it in the Silver color (DVD-RV30S), then go for it! I spent a month trying to find the RV-30 in silver but had to buy the black before the time limits on my $25 rebate were up.

Once again, I fully recommend this Panasonic DVD player and all other Panasonic products. I ended up paying about $190 with the rebate, so I hope you can find a similar deal.

Good luck!

I have owned this player for 6 months now. It has never had a problem on any DVD. I have rented many DVD's and some of them were quite scratched, and it has never skipped or missed a beat. Layer changes are quick and barely noticeable. The multiple speed fast forward and frame by frame are awesome features. You can play movies at double speed and still get sound (albeit they all sound like the chipmunks!) This player has coax and Optical sound output and S-Video output to interface with your TV and stereo. The sound quality is amazing, I have it hooked up to a Yamaha RXV-595 amplifier, and Dolby Digital and DTS sound incredible. This is a great player except for the fact that it will not read burnt or homemade discs. If you are the type of guy who wants to go on the internet and download a VCD and then burn it, you will not be able to play this type of disc in this player. However, if you are not likely to do this, the player is unbeatable. It is made in Japan, and the quality is very good. Another big plus is how quiet it is when playing a DVD. My friend has a Sharp, and you can hear the DVD playing in the machine overtop of some of the quiet scenes. This is not a problem in this unit. Playback of audio CD's works great, as long as the disc is not burnt. The remote is easy to use once you get used to it, and there are many features. The player supports multiple camera angles, however i have only seen one DVD that takes advantage of this. I will give this player a 4 out of 5 only because of the lack of ability to play MP3 CD's and CD-R and CD-RW discs.

Note: I am actually reviewing the RV-27. The RV-27 and RV-31 are basically replacement models for the RV-30 that add MP3 support and cost the same. These models are replacing the the RV-30 in stores, but have not yet appeared in the Epinions product database, so I placed my review here in the meantime, because I can't see any reason to buy an RV-30 now if you can get the enhanced RV-27 or RV-31 for the same price.

Panasonic's RV-27 appears to be identical to its popular RV-31 model. Both the RV-31 and the RV-27 include all the features of the highly praised RV-30 but add the ability to play MP3 audio files on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The only difference (apparent to me) between the RV-31 and the RV-27 is that I've only seen the RV-27 at Target stores.

Here are some of the highlights from my experience with the RV-27:

MP3 capability

[RV-27 and RV-31 only -- the RV-30 does not have this feature]. This player can play CD-R and CD-RW discs with MP3 audio files. I didn't get a chance to try this out unfortunately. I will point out, however, that this player will only show the number of the MP3 it is playing, whereas the Samsung DVD-M301 can show up to 8 characters of the file name.

No 5.1 decoders

Not a big deal to me since I don't have a surround receiver. If I do get one, I'd rather get the decoders in the receiver and use a single digital connection for audio (rather than separate analog connections for each channel). This player has the optical output that makes this possible, making it perfect for my needs.

Dialogue Enhancer

This feature raises the volume level of dialogue (center channel) without raising the volume of music and sound effects. Seems to work reasonably well.

Scanning

Several speeds are supported from 2X to 100X. The 2X speed is fairly smooth and offers the option of playing audio (somewhat garbled of course) while scanning. However, I found that the Samsung DVD-M301's 2X speed was just as smooth, if not smoother and it also offers the audio option.

Resume feature

A good idea with an incredibly frustrating implementation. This really annoyed me. The idea is that when you stop in the middle of a movie, the player remembers your position on the disc, even if you power off the player (but not if you eject the disc). The problem with this feature is that it only works if you remember to press the "Play Mode" button before pressing "Stop". Here I wondered why the button is called "Play Mode" -- how about "marker" or something like that. But then again, why do I have to press a button at all? What if I forget? Why not always remember the last place I stopped? When I bought the Samsung DVD-M301, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it had the same feature, but they did it right. No need to press any button to tell the player to remember its position.

On-screen Menus

The on-screen menus on this model are reasonably easy to use, but I found the Samsung's menus to be simpler and easier to use. My main issue with the Panasonic menus is that they have horizontal "tabs" to navigate to different menus (which I tended to forget about), whereas the Samsung menus are purely vertical and straightforward to operate.

Problem with remote control

Maybe it was just bad luck, but my remote control didn't work. Actually, it did work at first, but it only lasted through one movie and one day of usage. After that, dead as a door nail. I tried every angle imaginable. I tried it an inch from the unit. I tried banging it and I tried replacing the batteries with ones from a working remote. No luck. And so I decided it was going back to the store. As I repacked the unit to take it back, I tried the remote one last time just for kicks and giggles. To my surprise, it now suddenly worked! But it was too late now - the damage had already been done. I now had doubts about this unit and by then was intrigued by the Samsung DVD-M301 (see my review at http://marcman.epinions.com/content_25581817476), which offered similar features (including the MP3 capability) for $30 less. Back to the store went the Panasonic and the Samsung was welcomed into my home, in which it still happily resides. It's worth noting that the Samsung remote has not given me any problems and is even better than the Panasonic remote, because it has a joystick and buttons to control a TV.

Conclusion

I liked the Panasonic player a lot, aside from the remote control problem and the resume feature. However, the Samsung offered the same features and a better remote at a lower price, so I couldn't pass it up.

Last year I decided to make the plunge into the world of home theater, and when I started doing the research into components, I was a bit taken aback by the amount of choices in speakers, receivers, and in DVD players. I was starting from scratch but wanted to purchase an entire system that would last me for awhile since money is not flowing out of my bank account.

After some research into DVD players, I narrowed my choices and eventually settled on the Panasonic DVD-RV30. The primary consideration, I must admit, was price since through a couple special deals, I was able to purchase the player for roughly $100 -- quite a steal! However, I would NOT have purchased this unit if the features didn't live up to my standards.

In particular, Dolby Digital and DTS output were ESSENTIAL since I was definitely buying a 5.1 home theater speaker system. Next, I wanted digital output, preferably optical (the other being coax -- no real difference except that optical connections tend to be more commonplace on receivers). Lastly, I wanted high quality video output.

The DVD-RV30 satisfied all of these requirements with particular emphasis on the third. Not only does the DVD-RV30 support the higher quality S-video output (the baseline being "RCA" -- a normal video connector), it also possesses Component video output. In each case (from RCA to S-video and from S-video to Component), the signal quality improves because instead of mixing the signal into one big mess (which RCA does onto a single wire, basically), the signal stays separated into its parts thereby minimizing signal degradation -- ie., higher quality signal and a better picture.

Now, my TV is not capable of handling S-video or Component signals (it doesn't have the right connectors in back), but I wanted to find a player with those outputs simply because I would have the option to upgrade my TV later on without also then needing to upgrade my DVD player. The DVD-RV30 is therefore a little more "future proof" for me.

I have been very pleased with the performance of the player. I only used the remote briefly (I now have a universal), but it was well appointed with well designed buttons making lights-out use possible. Playback is excellent, and I have not encountered any trouble with any movie. I am not able to discuss the precise video quality (hence the 4 rating) because my TV is not able to match the output of the player. Music playback (CDs) has also been excellent.

The only drawback to the player which I see is the inability to play MP3s or VCDs. While this isn't an issue with me, some people seem to regard this as a significant problem. If you have no idea to what I'm referring, you should probably overlook this shortfall!

Even for the normal price of around $200, this is a very good player. While it lacks some high end features, such as MP3/VCD playback and advanced scanning and tracking, the DVD-RV30 plays DVDs and CDs very well and is a great player with which to experience home theater.

Ladies and Gent's, this is supposedly a DVD player! When I first broke open the box, I was surprised to find that Panasonic actually did make a DVD player. When I first plugged it in, I thought the thing was going to shoot sparks, due to a horrible history with Panasonic devices in my past. Well, it didnt shoot sparks, because the stupid thing couldn't even turn on! Back to the store for a replacement. Well, this one actually worked, and I'm sketchy about saying it worked. The sound was horrible on my Dolby 5.1 Digital receiver by Sony, it sounded like a record playing. The video was decent, if it were actually snowing in the movie I was watching. Dont buy this product, its a dead end.

This opinion is on the dvd-rv30 by pansonic. It is a discontinued model, but now you can pick it up for $150 or less if you shop around. It has some standard features and some extra ones, but it is definitely worth the price.

The best feature is for those individuals who have a receiver with a subwoofer, but aren't digital yet. This player has a separate subwoofer input so that you can get your bass without being required to spring another couple of hundred dollars to get it. It also has some extra sound features like dialogue enhancer and the cinema memory. These are pretty much just bells and whistles, but they can make the difference when comparing it to similarly priced models. These features allow the dialogue to ring clear over the background effects, and also create a more movie theater-like experience, respectively. The video quality is what you would expect since dvd is a standardized format.

The negative aspect of this player is that it is discontinued, and will be difficult to find. Also the panasonic model that replaced this one has more features like the ability to play mp3 files and cd-rs. Overall a good player, especially since it is pretty cheap now.

This player will not blow you away, but has more than enough for the average user. Anyone looking in the under 150 range would be well off to grab this player.

This is the first DVD player that I had ever owned and I was very impressed with many things. First the price, on Amazon.com i found it for $150 with free shipping. It was perfect because it could connect to my speakers and my tv without extra wires being necessary to buy. Even if you do not have a speaker system this player can plug right into the television.
When it first arrived I quickly put it together to see what it could do. I rented the movie that people say gives DVD players the most trouble, The Matrix. It played it beautifully with amazing color and sound. I was very impressed.
This player has many features, some of them unecessary, such as the ability to change camera angle, however, it does not have a zoom feature which was mildly disappointing. The one other bad thing about it is that the remote is not backlit, otherwise this is a fantastic DVD player at a great price!!!

This is for the new Panasonic RV31 which just came out Feb-01. It's a great machine especially for the money.
All the bells and whistles. You don't need DTS decoder etc... since your home theatre receiver will have one. Anyways it will sound good just as is, if using any pair of good speakers.

The MP3 format is great as it doubles as my CD player as well as DVD. So Audio and video together in one unit-space saver. I pop in a CDR with 150 songs and who cares if i only have one slot for discs. The pain is that you don't know what songs are what on when playing back MP3s as it doesn't list the name of the songs.

One good thing about this machine is it will read every conceiveable type of disc whether scratched or not. Many other machines either skip or freeze when it's unable to read the data. So thumbs up for Panasonic. Be careful not to buy a cheap DVD player as you will run into these problems (eg Sony 300, RCA, Samsung, etc....).

As for progressive scan or not. For this price its a beauty. Many newer tvs now have line doublers so it's not impairative to have progressive scan on the DVD machine.

Component out is a nice feature. Don't go overboard on the wire you decide to buy, esp given the price of this machine. Some people say you should pay $100-150 for a set of wire. I say no way if your machine only cost $200 US!! Just ensure you get the ones around $50 and are double shielded. Regular monsters will do fine!

Got mine in Canada for $300 all in (taxes included)
So about $260 Cdn. Real deal from Eatons at the time when it first came out. I now see (Dec-01) that prices have dropped considerably - now something like $250 Cdn or less.

Any questions you can email me at

As an owner of the RV30 DVD player, I have no complaints about this DVD player at all. Its very easy to use (even for a biologist like myself).

Ease of Use
Of course when you get home with your new found toy, you would rather watch a movie than read the manual to figure out what all the buttons do. You just pop in your DVD and hit play and you are on your way. Then you can figure out what all the options mean.

Features (What do all those technical names really mean?)
Dialogue Enhancer:
Have you ever gotten to a part of the movie where is really quiet and you can't hear what any of the actors are saying because they're whispering. And of course you don't want to turn up the volume because the next scene will be some blaring explosion. Well, this little feature enhances the dialogue but NOT the background volume so you can hear them better.

Digital Cinema Mode for cinema-like luminance and color with improved detail even in dark scenes

Still picture display: umm when you pause its a single frozen frame. (pretty self explanatory)

Advanced V.S.S. allows for a remarkable surround sound effect even while only using the front two speakers

Separate sub woofer out-put

Cinema mode: this darkens the picture a little so you feel like your in the movie theater. Its really not that noticeable.

How does this compare to the new RV31K model

Well besides from being the exact same price of $200:

Ability to play MP3's: you can play all you're burned CD-R

Cinema Memory mode: if you have a particular setting of options you don't have to enter them in every time. There is a one touch memory button. You can store up to four different settings.

Shuttle Dial control: on the unit itself, there is a dial that you can turn to the left of right to FF/R.

Additional controls on unit for various options: The older model doesn't have this so you have to have the remote control to select for the menu and dialogue enhancer or other features. So the face of the new model has a lot more buttons because in case you misplace you're remote and you're in the middle of the movie you're still in luck.

Overall, panasonic makes a solid affordable DVD player. For the same price I would purchase the newer model with the enhanced features. Enjoy!
