I bought a DVD player in November 2003 for approximately $140.00 and in August 2005 it let go. I do not think that we should have to replace an electronic every other year. Especially not Panasonic.

H02 drove me to drown this lemon in H20

Having been pleased with the performance of my Panasonic TV and my Panasonic Home Theater System, I decided to try brand loyalty and spent a little extra for the DVD-RV31. It performed OK during the warranty period, and then began a gradual decline ... occasional difficulty reading discs, hanging during playback, etc.
It has now given up entirely on reading the discs and gives endless H02 error messages. I am going to put it out of its misery by submerging in H20 and buy a $25 off brand at Circuit City. It can't function any worse and I'll feel a lot better at that price when it comes time to trash it.

You rent your DVDs, you get snacks ready, you settle onto your sofa, you're in for a solid evening's entertainme----Whoa STOP right there says Panasonic RV31, I think not. Instead of your hours of movie goodness I instead give you...H02!!! Hmm...what's this? Okay...let's just take the disc out, switch the player off, give it a couple of minutes, turn it back on. Here we go...wait...the green display numerals seem to flicker, a couple of zeros and not very encouraging noises and H02 again. The evening is soon a dead loss time to get on the net and look into this , and hello, it seems I've joined an exclusive club - Club H02. Can't say it's a pleasure being a member. Gonna go for cheap next time, Panasonic no more.

After over 3 years...the HO2 strikes.

I bought this player online over 3 years ago and has been satisfied since then. Yesterday, it finally gave me the ultimate message: HO2. This is despite some abuse from my part, such as leaving it on pause, turning the TV off, and letting it sit for over 24 hours (did that on many occasions), plugging and unplugging and traveling with it multiple times, etc. Therefore I think that I either was lucky, or the other people that write reviews were the ones buying the lemons ... (people are generally more prone to write reviews when they are not satisfied, for some reason, leading to biased and skewed results)

Not much to say in detail about this (I'll leave this to the other reviewers who have done a good job).
I just wanted to note that this DVD finally died (with the dreaded H02 error) after about 3 years. I have noticed the past 6 months, I was getting increasing amount of digital "noise" that cleaning did not seem to clear.

I bought this as our first DVD player from Best Buy. It worked great for around a year. Then the H02 code popped up. Did some searches online and found out you can pop the top off and rotate the spindle disc and it will work...Great!...it worked for about another month or so and now it plays choppy, and after trying the spinning the disc trick again it stills plays very choppy where you can't even bare to watch it.
I would stay away from this model if possible.

My Panasonic DVD RV31 player died yesterday. it was only 2 years old. It was a H02 Error. Of course out of warranty. Let me direct you to a site that has over 100 posts detailing the same error and of course no help from panasonic. Before buying this unit go to this site.

I am actually surprised that this website has so many positive reviews about Panasonic dvd players. Makes it look unrealistic, especially when so many people are having their machines turn into a piece of junk almost overnight & there's no support available. Support is there, but you can buy 2-3 cheaper new players in that same amount you will end spending on repair. I had RV-31 for about 1.5 years when I received the infamous "HO2 error". Its not the only one, there are a whole slew of them..."HO3" & "HO5" & god knows how many more!!! I never expected this from Panasonic & am of the opinion now that it is not worthwhile to invest a decent amount in a branded product. Any off-the-shelf product made by any tom, dick & harry is as good as ones made by corp.'s like sony, toshiba & panasonic especially when technology is changing so fast. At least if the cheap products go bad, you won't feel too bad about it.

After owning this unit for just more than one year, it just stopped working. The drawer would not oped, and would not even read the DVD. I kept getting and error code of HO3. I decided to get online to search some about the issue since there was no info in the manual. It seems that I am not the only one with this same problem. There were no less than 75 others with the same error code, and most of them occurred 12 to 13 months after ownership (just past the warranty expiration) With repairs estimated to cost more than the cost of the unit I have decided to purchase something else. I will NEVER buy a Panasonic again!! That also seems to be the opinion of others on the message boards i have seen. Good luck, and i hope you see this review BEFORE you buy.

This is the perfect DVD player for the budget conscious person who is ready to get into the new age of video and audio but doesn't want to waste their money on a cheap item.
Now selling for under $100 USD, this is one of the highest quality products in the lower-mid range of DVD players. The price is well worth it for the quality of service it provides. Sure, you can find other models for much less but the sacrifice of quality will be evident. I bought mine a while ago for much more than it is now and I would gladly pay that amount again. Here's how it rates in each specific area of performance...
PICTURE (A+)
I truly don't see how this could be improved. The picture is completely flawless, from the colour perfections to the crispness and virtuality of the figures this model excels in video quality.
I've seen DVDs on other more expensive models at relatives' and friends' homes but the only difference I've ever noticed is that mine is better. I would recommend using an S-Video cord for more colour depth, otherwise save the $10, the RCA plugs are good enough.
SOUND (A+)
With the proper receiver (with built in Dolby Digital decoding) this DVD player will give you a cinema like atmosphere complete with great surround sound and crystal clear audio. Even without a home theater setup of 5 speakers or more, you can enjoy great virtual surround sound from just 2 front speakers--I've tried both and was totally impressed.
There are also multiple sound modification options if you wish including:
Dialogue Enhancer: will make the speech more prominent so that the general volume can be turned down without losing the dialogue.
Virtual Surround Sound: If you don't have that surround speaker package and a Digital receiver. However, I would get the receiver because this doesn't make much of a difference to my ears.
Bass Plus: provides a bass boost. Works well.
Cinema mode: simulates the acoustics of a theater in your home. This can also work well but you can find this type of option in a good receiver.
Most of the audio options are for those that don't want to get an expensive receiver and are fine with using their TV sets for the sound. Either way, the sound quality is generally great from this player.
FEATURES (A)
You can change the angles of some DVDs.
See the audio options above.
Great feature, possibly the best thing about this player is the "disk stabilizer". This is a built in feature that helps the DVD player to read through scuffs and scratches on DVDs that it is playing. This is particularly good for those that plan to do a lot of renting. Keep in mind that it is not fool proof. I have come in contact with some badly scratched DVDs that did skip or cut out a bit.
REMOTE (A)
This is a great remote. Easy to use and very comprehensible to even the laymen of modern electronics. One negative may be that it is not universal (can't be programmed to multiple units) however, I don't usually do that anyway so to me it doesn't matter at all. Only real knock on the remote is that it is not backlit so it's hard to see the buttons in the dark, however, even in the darkest rooms, the glare off the TV screen can usually give you enough light to see what you need to.
MANUAL (A)
Easy to read, good descriptive information regarding operational practices.
***This is a very good unit to get, especially if quality is your number one desire.
