Great ski!

Pluss:
Fast turns, good edge grip (even unsharpened), good carving, forgiving.

Minus:
Atomic bindings. I have Look p12s. They are much safer.

I spend most of my time skiing moguls in the East. (I've competed in freestyle and won a couple of competitions) I have tested and researched all other slalom skis and have found that these are the best for quick turns with tons of edge grip. A good edge tends to be hard to find on a fast ski but you get it with this. This ski is also good all around so if you want to do some cruzing this is a good carving ski. I have tried the higher level slalom ski by Atomic and have found that it is almost the same except it is less forgiving. As well as a great ski on every day you will also be glad you are on these skis on those days when you are tired at the end or have been out all night before. If you are looking for a good ski this is it. Also the Dynastar carve 9 and 10 are close but this seems to be a little bit better.

Just bouught a pair this season.Im a 40 something male who has skied for years.I was looking for a ski that i wouldn,t have to work as hard as my old head gs 205,s hehehe....
have to admit i loved those skis...But found myself standing in line for the gondola in tremblant.Looked around and boy did i stand out from the crowd.Nobodys skis were above therehead...except mine lol.Time for an upgrade, did my research and settled on these.Have to admit i was a little reluctant haveing never tried a pair. But i tell u these skies are great good flex turn great ,hold an unbelievable edge and give u a great kick in the butt going into your next turn.iI find if i lean back a bit they fly and throw u into the next turn.Very important to get the right length...im 5-10 170lbs. and ski on 170s.

The Atomic Carve series has been a serious contender since they released it in the mid to late 1990s. The 9.18's are almost universally recommended as THE ski (if you ski on the East Coast - waist is a bit thin for the West and they ARE carving skis) to buy if you're looking for dramatic improvement to take you to the next level.

These excel under more icy conditions - they've got great grip, give the rider good feedback, and don't require nearly as much effort as a higher level Carve or Race series (Atomic's racing models) do. I've had my 2000 9.18's for a while now, and they've been perfect for what I've needed them for. The only place they suffer a bit is in powder, but they're not built for that.

As for weight, these are known to be some of the lightest on the market. As for price, these should be no more than $459 with bindings for last year's model if you buy in the fall. I picked mine up for $369, and most bigger shops should be making enough at $399, so I'd look to pay between $400-$460 if you're buying last year's. These are great skis even at "retail" but they're discounted almost everywhere when there are leftovers - save yourself some $!

Also, I've seen these as low as $200 brand new from bigger sporting goods stores, but that's an extreme rarity, and no ski shop will sell them for anywhere near that - if you run across them - buy two!

These skis are a steal at any price and will allow intermediate skiers to excel extremely quickly. I can't be happier with them - great carving ability, edge grip, and muscle. There's a reason these are consistently rated very highly year after year.

Atomic 9:18 Ski Review

Summary: Everything an advanced skier would want in a ski, the Atomic 9:18 wins the "Breakthrough Award" for lightweight, quick turning, and all-around response.

Pros: Lightweight, confidence inspiring, affordable.
Cons: I could make some up, but there really are none.

Compare to:
Volkl G-20
Head X-40
Fischer V-Carve 200

Keeping the wife happy is not an easy task. You knew that right? Every year the magazines tout a new wonder ski, or some ad describes the improving powers of their snow tools... and she buys in on the hype. Each year we demo new skis seeking the one model that lives up to it's media attention. It rarely happens; it would seem as though the more money a company has to advertise, the worse the ski is.

We do end up finding the best of each year, it is not like they all fail in succeeding: A few years back it was the Head cyber 24, then the Cross Ti. Last years top sub-expert pick was the Volkl G-20 20-20.

This years wonder ski, hands down, is the Atomic 9:18.

My wife made beautiful round turns, flowed through powder, tackled the crud, and then made snappy short radius turns... all in a single run. Atomics greatest success was in creating a ski that is remarkably lightweight, without being squirrelly. This in contrast to other skis she has really enjoyed, such as her Stockli's or her all time favorites- a pair of Authier Zubiflex Giant. Both responsive but heavy, but a much better choice than the light weight but dicey Salomon X-Scream.

What exactly makes someone an "advanced" skier? Carol (my wife) can ski anything groomed, and has all the technique, but not always the finesse... she makes the moves but doesn't "own" them. She handles bumps, skis the racecourse but doesn't race it, and gripes about crud and powder. I figure she's "advanced". No longer an intermediate, not always an expert.

In the past you would have heard me refer to the Atomic binding on the 9:18 as a liability, or at least detraction. It is true that the ramp angle of the binding did necessitate a heel lift in Carol's boots, but otherwise the binding helps with both the weight and response of the ski. Atomics rearward moving free flex system really does work better than Markers forward moving Selective-Control design.

Looking for an accommodating go-anywhere ski for lighter-weight intermediate-advanced skiers? You'll find it all in the Atomic 9:18

I have 3 pairs of skis in my garage and these ski's were my pride and joy. When I purchased them with bindings they ran a total of about a 1000 bucks, with the sale the shop had going I was down to 550 all in plus some vouchers I had been given by a customer of mine (who owned the shop), I walked away only 50 dollars lighter in my wallet!

What I'm guessing you want to know is if they are worth something in the order of 600 ?

The short answer is yes but I haven't skied mine now for quite some time.

My problem (among others) is that I lived on the east coast and I skied New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.

While I lived there the conditions were shall we say chilly and this translated to hard packed snow. I found that I needed a longer ski to hang on in the icy conditions and so I moved up to 180's.

Previously I had been skiing 170 Rossignol Cut 10.4 skis and these had served me well as I learned to plough, fall and eventually turn.

The problem was at higher speeds and more aggressive turns they simply gave up, they would either chatter or choose to stop their contact with the snow altogether on the turns.

These now 'belong' to my step-father.

The Atomic's stopped all of that, I could cruise and carve agressive fast turns and rarely would they give up the ghost. They are a reassuringly stable ski and with the Marker bio-metric bindings I had fitted you really feel the control in the ski.

So why I hear you ask do I speak of them in the past tense ?

There are 2 answers.
The first is that they are simply too long for me, I should be skiing a 170 end of story.

The second is I moved to Colorado and the conditions are such that you do not encounter as much icy packed snow and you need a shorter ski to be able to turn more quickly.

I bought a pair of Nordica ski's at 170 and I like them.

In reality if my Atomic's were 170 in length I would never have looked lustfully at another ski again - well at least not until another revelation such as the shaping of skis came along.

If I could chop 10cm off them I'd be talking this way about the Nordica's.

if you own some 170's and find them too short ?

Atomic 918 Device

Pluss:
Very fast, stable, tenacious grip on ice

Minus:
A bit heavy, not very well suited for quick turns

I've had the 918's (180 cm)for about 15 months now and overall I am really enjoying them. They are very quick and they carve great sweeping turns. They are stable at speed, grip ice well, and will blow through crud. They are on the heavy side, and if you are looking to throw short, rapid slalom turns they are probably not the ski for you. They are definitely more of a GS ski.

I bought them over the net (and saved over $200 off what the local ski shops wanted), and the integrated bindings were a snap to set up and adjust. The instructions that came with them were very clear.

and you don't want to get complicated, but have a few bucks to spend, get yourself a pair of Atomic C 9.18W Alpine skis with the Device 311 bindings and a pair of C:9 boots.

At The Gate:
I was headed for a bone breaking disaster. After 6 years on the slopes I was attempting to do some of those double black diamond runs. Sometimes things went sort of well (which means I made it to the bottom in one piece) and sometimes I saw my life, and I mean my entire life flash in front of my eyes as I tackled the harder runs. I never felt completely in control. Being a control freak I need to be in control of where my body is headed at breath taking speeds. A small particle of ice on a run would send me into free fall. Hitting the slopes was not fun anymore. This past December I finally pinpointed the problem! viola! It was not de skier it was de skis! This skier need a ski that could provide a little more assistance in the carving department.

Research:
Once I decided that it was de skis I started to shop around to see which ski would turn this forty two year old into the next Peekabo Street. Besides the problems of age and fear, I am also a light weight, I can just manage to break 100 pounds during the holidays. A stiff ski and a lightweight skier are not a good combination on ice, unless you do not mind going where the ski takes you. After trying a number of pairs of skis at "demo" days I still had not found what I was looking for. I ended up visiting a friends buddy who worked at a ski shop. This man sells skis, lots of skis. When he is not selling skis he is on the slopes. After talking to me for about 5 minutes he said he knew what would be best and brought out the Atomic C 9:18W BetaCarvs. These are skis are new for 2002/2003 ski season. They are made of graphite with a Texalium 100 top sheet, making for a very light weight, very flexible ski. The bindings that come with these skis are 311 bindings and they are built right into the ski without drilling holes. The binding on these are mounted ahead of the center which helps accommodate a womans center of mass. I paid $724.99 Canadian for these skis which converted to $470.00 USD with the bindings, a great deal considering that the lowest recent price I have seen them for here in the US is $556. While upgrading the skis I also bought a pair of C:9 womans boots. These boots are prewired for heat! All you need to do is purchase a set of thermic batteries and you are going to have toasty toes. I paid $339 Canadian for the boots which converted to $220USD (lowest price found in the US was 349). The batteries cost another 79.00 dollars but that equal to 79 hot hands packs which someone like me could use in about 20 days! With new skis and new boots I headed off to the slopes to go for the gold.

The Results:
Unbelievable. My "pack" had their mouths hanging open as I skied like I have never skied before. I felt like a completely different skier. These skis allow you to really carve in your turns. Instead of sliding and slipping on the ice I was tearing up the ice and moving down the hill like I had never moved before. Black diamond hills became easy to tackle and fun! Having lost some of the fear factor I decided to go try the moguls. I did the moguls! I did them well and I had fun! When you are not in control of what you are doing it is hard to relax and have fun. With these skis I have regained control and I am having fun skiing like I have never had before.
